Avril Glen “Flip” Best, Jr., 71, of Cadiz, passed away at his home on Monday, June 29, 2026 with his wife Tammy Best by his side. Flip was born October 31, 1954 in Martins Ferry, Ohio a son of the late Avril Glen and Mary M. Thompson Best, Sr.
Flip was a 1973 graduate of Cadiz High School. After graduation he went straight to work in the coal mines, following in his dad, “Flip’s” footsteps. He worked at Y&O #1 Nelm’s Mine, Wineberg Mine in Utah, Harrison Mining in Cadiz and Hopedale Mining in Hopedale. He also worked a Carpet Mill and Steel Mill while living in Georgia. After his retirement he worked at Rural King in St. Clairsville, Ohio.
Flip enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, especially his grandchildren who called him “Pap”. He loved sitting on his porch watching the traffic go by, listening to Toby Keith, going mushroom hunting with his brother Kevin, taking his grandson Kevin fishing and feeding all the stray cats in the neighborhood.
In addition to his parents, Flip was preceded in death by his sister, Mary L. Banks; father-in-law, Raymond Newbrough; brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Robin Newbrough and niece, Julie Newbrough.
Surviving is his wife of 24 years, Tammy D. (Newbrough) Best; his sons: Glenn Allen Best and Mark William Best both of Georgia; stepson, Steven (Janelle) Moreland of Jewett; stepdaughter, Amanda (Joshua) Manbeck of Cadiz; his precious grandchildren: Kevin Glen Bradley Best, and Coraline Elaine Pauline Best of Georgia, Bryson Moreland, Aleigha Harubin, Lorelai and Ryan Manbeck; his sisters: Virginia Potash of Cadiz and Cathy Stotts of Cambridge; his brothers: Mark Best of Tennessee, Kevin (Tammy) Best of Cadiz and Craig (Karla) Best of Cadiz; sisters-in-law: Lisa (Roy) Smith of Cadiz and Sue (Rick) Wright of Jewett; brothers-in-law: Ed Banks of Cadiz and Kenny Newbrough of Germano; his mother-in-law, Eileen Newbrough of Jewett; nieces and nephews: Eddie (Kristy) Banks, Michael (Jodi) Best, Amy (Chris) Banks, John (Sheelagh) Kendziorski, Jr., Joe and Nancy Kendziorski, Mallory Potash, Tabitha Stotts, Nick, Hannah and Mikenzi Edwards, Kamree and Lauren Best, Cody (Courtney) Maffitt, Ali Birney, Ethan and Zac Newbrough, Andy (Mackenzie) Wright and Missy (Ray) Everhart.
Among those who will mourn Flip’s passing is his dog Bobo, who was his constant companion and loyal friend that stayed by his side until the very end.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2026 from 4:00 p,m. until the time of his funeral service at 6:00 p.m. at Clark-Kirkland-Barr Funeral Home, Cadiz with Dirk Harkins officiating. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family.
