Dana Spencer Mason, Sr.

Dana Spencer Mason, Sr. 75, Smithfield, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, October 10, 2023, in Florence, Alabama. He was born August 17, 1948, in Cadiz, Ohio, son of the late Francis B. “Joe” Mason and Carrie I. Smith Mason. Upon graduating from Cadiz High School in 1967, Dana worked for several years at Wilgus Lumber Company in Cadiz, Ohio. He then worked for nearly thirty years in local Ohio and Pennsylvania coal mines and steel mills until he retired in 2013.

In 1987, Dana obtained an associate degree from Jefferson County Technical College in Applied Business and Data Processing. 

Dana was an active member of St. James AME Church from his youth until he moved to Smithfield, Ohio, where he became an active member of Schaffer Chapel AME Church in McIntyre, Ohio. Dana enjoyed performing in Christmas plays and lay-speaking in several local churches and singing in the Men’s Choir - “Somebody Callin My Name” was one of his favorite songs.

In addition to his parents, Dana was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles E. Mason and F. Rodney Mason.

Dana is survived by four children: Dana S. Mason, Jr. (Michelle), Aaron B. Mason (Donna), Andre S. Christian, and Melissa A. Mason Rhodes (Jerome); four siblings: Melvin B. Mason (Imogene), Stephanie Mason Jackson (Dennis), Francine Mason Mitchell (Steven), and Michael L. Mason (Traci); twelve grandchildren; three great-children; numerous nieces and nephews; a special friend: Barbara Davenport, his Church Family, and many other relatives and friends.

The family wishes to acknowledge all cards, flowers, and any other gifts that were made to help them through their time of loss.

Visitation will be Thursday, October 19, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Clark-Kirkland Funeral Home, 172 S. Main St., Cadiz, OH 43907.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 20, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at Shaffer Chapel A.M.E. Church, 1216 Township Road 191 Bloomingdale, OH 43910; Pastor Melody Essex officiating. The burial will take place at the convenience of the family at Internment Holly Memorial Gardens, Colerain, Ohio.
