Dorothy Jean Luther, 89, of Cadiz, Ohio, passed away on October 15, 2025, at the Harrison County Home with her loved ones by her side. She was born on July 26, 1936, in Cadiz, Ohio, a daughter of the late William and Catherine Luther.
Dorothy grew up in Cadiz and was a graduate of Cadiz High School. She then went on to Kent State University and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She taught the 3rd grade in Akron City Schools and loved being an educator. Every summer, she would load up all of her teaching supplies in trunks and return to Cadiz to be with family and spend the summer teaching her nieces and nephews whatever she could. She was a member of the St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. She was a very family driven person, and adored her siblings and nieces and nephews.
Dorothy loved spending time with her nieces and nephews and took them on trips all over the country—from Gettysburg to Virginia Beach to Hawaii, she loved adventuring with them. She also traveled with her friends to Southern Europe and loved every moment of it. She was an old soul and always had a love for playing tunes on the organ and piano. She had many hobbies and loved to sew, garden, bake, do puzzles, quilt and do pottery. She also loved animals, especially cats. She had an artful eye and enjoyed photography, something she passed on to her nieces and nephews, and even a great nephew.
Dorothy was preceded in death in addition to her parents by her siblings, Mary Catherine Corso, Teresa Luther, William “Bill” Luther II and Betty Fledderus; and a nephew, Stevie Luther.
She is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. A special thanks to Carla Thompson for being a devoted friend and caregiver to Dorothy for several years.
The Harrison County Home cared for many members of Dorothy’s family, as well as Dorothy herself. Her family extends a sincere thank you to the staff of the home as well as SouthernCare Hospice for the excellent care and compassion their family has received.
Dorothy and her sister were a close-knit pair. The two passed away within one day of one another and will be honored and laid to rest at Cadiz Union Cemetery— she beside her parents and Betty beside her husband. In their honor, visitation will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 12:30 p.m. at Clark-Kirkland-Barr Funeral Home in Cadiz. A graveside service will follow at Cadiz Union Cemetery with Rev. Fr. Fred Kihm officiating.
