Ernest C. “Ernie” Mansfield, Sr., 72, of Cadiz, Ohio, passed away on June 5, 2026, at Trinity Medical Center West. He was born on June 26, 1953, in Martins Ferry, Ohio to the late John and Alice DeWalt Mansfield.
Ernie was ornery as could be, you could always expect a witty comment or to laugh at something he said when you were around him. He was the owner and operator of Mansfield Hauling. Ernie enjoyed his mornings visiting with his friends over coffee at the restaurants in town. He was also a member of the Cadiz Fraternal Order of Eagles #2162, Cadiz American Legion Post #34 where he was an officer of the Sons of the American Legion and honorary member of the Cadiz Volunteer Fire Department. He also enjoyed spending time at and socializing with people at Hopedale American Legion. Ernie was always on the move; you would always see him driving around town in his car, and if you were lucky enough, you’d get a colorful comment or gesture from him as he went by!
He was preceded in death in addition to his parents by his stepson: Ricky C. Tanner; 6 brothers: Charles, Robert, Lloyd, Walter, Mark and Jackie Mansfield; and a sister, Bertha Mansfield; and mother-in-law, Mabel Barnhart Richards.
Ernie is survived by his wife, Sherri Simms Mansfield; sons, Ernest C. “Zeke” (Edie) Mansfield, Jr. of Ravenna, Christopher M. “Spanky” (Jaynelle) Mansfield of Cadiz; daughter, Melissa (Tony) Litman of Cadiz; step daughter, Tawnya (Dustin) Myers of Adena; grandchildren, T.J. Kelley, Jacob Kelley, Chandler Mansfield, Victoria Mansfield, Brandon (Juli) Mansfield, Kayla (Jesse) Manbeck, Ashley Mansfield, Gavin Tanner, Lexi Carter and Dylan Carter; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Mike Mansfield of Durham, NC; 2 sisters: Linda Ledger of Cadiz and Connie Proffitt of Hamilton, Ohio; and father-in-law, Perl “Porky” Richards.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 8, 2026, from 2-4 and 6-8 at Clark-Kirkland-Barr Funeral Home in Cadiz. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. with Joyce Barr-Peters as the officiant. Burial will follow at Cadiz Union Cemetery.
