Helen Smigiel Thornton, 88, of Jewett, died Sunday, March 2, 2014 at her home. She was born June 16, 1925 in Ashland, Ohio, a daughter of the late Edmund and Wanda Seidner Whitcomb. Mrs. Thornton was a member of the Hopedale Church of Christ, the Jewett Bowling League and was the best cook ever, especially mashed potatoes. She was a former waitress at the Pike Inn near Hopedale. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of thirty five years, David J. Thornton in 2008; and two brothers, Ed and Virgil Whitcomb. Surviving are three daughters, Sandra Ott (John Kerr) of Hopedale, Regina Smigiel (Bill Morris) of Germano, and Joan Weaver (Tom Weaver, deceased) of Jewett; a grandson, Chuck Weaver; two granddaughters, Daniela Weaver and Misty Holloway (Chris); two great grandchildren, Tyler and Paige Weaver; two sisters, Florence Sager (Waitman) of Cleveland and Evelyn Montgomery of Cincinnati; and a brother, Russell Whitcomb of Cincinnati. Friends may call Wednesday, 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m. at Clark-Kirkland Funeral Home, Cadiz. Pastor Dean Blythe will officiate.
