James E. Johnson, 96, of Cadiz, passed away at home on Monday, November 20, 2023, at his home. He was born September 19, 1927, in Cadiz, Ohio a son of the late Frank and Greta Todd Johnson.

Jim was a Korean War Veteran, having served in the navy. He was a lifelong resident of Harrison County. Jim graduated from The Ohio State University College of Agriculture.

He was preceded in death in addition to his parents by; his wife Margaret “Biddy” Mattern Johnson; 3 brothers: Clark, Robert, and Alfred Johnson.

Jim was a cattleman for most of his life, having a herd that produced many county 4H champion steers and Ohio State Fair participants. He was a member of the Ohio Cattleman’s Association, as well as several national breed associations. He was instrumental in the introduction of some new now popular exotic breeds into Ohio & his breeding program.

He was also a rural mail carrier for over 30 years. Jim was a patron of Sally Buffalo Park, having donated the current early schoolhouse located near Wallace Lodge, as well as contributing to other park projects like the modernized youth playgrounds. In his later years, he enjoyed his daily tours around the park, becoming known as the park’s “defacto” mayor.

Jim is survived by his son, Douglas Johnson of Cadiz, Ohio; 2 grandsons: Darren (Angie) Johnson of Cadiz, Ohio and Eric Johnson of Ooltewah, Tennessee; 6 great grandchildren; Kobey Johnson of Scio, Ohio, Logan Johson of Cadiz, Ohio, Ian Saho of Wintersville, Ohio, Cade Johnson of Nashville, Tennessee, Kendall Johnson of Rochester, New York, and Quinn Johnson of Ooltewah, Tennessee.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, November 24, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at Holly Memorial Gardens Chapel with John Visser officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Harrison County Cancer Crusaders, c/o Julie McPeak, 226 Charleston Street, Cadiz, Ohio 43907 or the “V” Foundation, 14600 Weston Parkway, Cary, NC 27153.
