James Mcfarlan

July 4, 1923 — September 3, 2015

James Sheridan McFarlan, 92, of Cadiz, joined his Savior and heavenly family on September 3, 2015. James was born and raised on the family farm near Cadiz, the son of the late William E. and Margaret Elizabeth (Morgan) McFarlan. He was a Christian by faith and an active member of the Cadiz Presbyterian Church and the former Grace United Presbyterian Church where he had served as an elder and trustee. A graduate of Cadiz High School, James worked the family farm alongside his parents till he met the love of his life, Virginia Ash. After service in U.S. Army, he returned to Cadiz to marry Virginia and raise a family. He was employed in the mining industry for 30 years, first with Hanna Coal and then Consolidated Coal as a shovel oiler. He was recently awarded a 70 year membership pin as a loyal member of the U.M.W.A. James had many interests from woodworking to hunting, but most loved working around the home and spending time with his immediate and extended family. James was a charter member of Harrison County's First Families and a member of the Harrison County Genealogy and Historical Societies. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by a sister, Martha (John) Revennaugh; two brothers: William (Doris) McFarlan and Edward (Marthella) McFarlan; and a daughter, Debra (Kevin) Gundlach. Surviving James is his wife of 65 years, Virginia (Ash) McFarlan; a daughter, Susan (Charles) Watson of Nags Head, NC; a son, David (Kay) McFarlan of Martins Ferry; a son-in-law, Kevin Gundlach of Ft. Wayne, IN; four grandchildren: Kendall Gundlach, Carrie (David) Watson-Wortman, Tiffany (Gary) Misenhelder and Tara Snyder; and two great grandchildren, Ian Johnston and Garnet Wortman. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, September 8 at 11:00 a.m. at the Clark-Kirkland Funeral Home, Cadiz with Rev. John Harris officiating. Visitation is scheduled for Monday from 4-7 at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Cadiz Union Cemetery. Condolences may also be made at www.clark-kirkland.com. Memorial contributions may be made to Cadiz Presbyterian Church, American Cancer Society, American Diabetes Association or gift cards may be sent to Medi-Home Health and Hopsice of St. Clairsville for use by their volunteers.
