John R. Ramsey, 87 of New Athens, died Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at the home of his daughter Lindy in New Athens after a lengthy illness with his family by his side. He was born September 8, 1928 in Dennison, Ohio a son of the late Wilbur and Merle Lafferty Ramsey. He loved to rebuild antique John Deere tractors. If an object wasn't John Deere green when he got it, it wasn't long until it was. He was a member of the Woodsfield Tractor Club, Harrison County Antique Tractor Club and loved to take his tractors to pulls and show them off. He was an avid horseman for many years and would show horses and ponies all over Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania and a member of many horse clubs over the years. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War a member of the American Legion and the UMWA. He was a retired coal miner having worked at Y&0 #2 and a former transport driver for the Department of Veterans Affairs. He made a lot of trips to the VA hospitals and made a lot of friends in the process. He was preceded in death in addition to his parents; by his wife of 65 years, Thelma Adams Ramsey in January of 2015. He is survived by 4 children: Cindy Schindler of North Ridgeville, Lindy Ramsey of New Athens, Rick (Marie) Ramsey of New Athens and Debbie (Mark) Koehler of Beallsville; 8 grandchildren: Carrie and Keith (Nicole Gray), Lacey, Sara, Matt (Meghan), Kevin, Logan (Danielle) and Martha (Zachary Burkhart); 4 great grandchildren: Lexis Klee and Josie Olenski; Evan and Liam Ramsey. Calling hours will be held Saturday, April 30 from Noon until time of service at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Wilford Simeral officiating. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family. Military honors will be provided by the Cadiz American Legion. Special thanks to his buddy Ed Smith who was a great friend to John.
